AFF's History

After moving to Australia from Memphis, Tennessee in 1983, Jack Sonnemann and his wife, Margaret, founded the Australian Federation for the Family (AFF) in response to the shocking open display of pornography in the nation.

At the time, they attempted to get existing Australian pro-family groups involved in a boycott of advertisers in pornography but were told to "start a group yourself" because of the general fear of litigation.

Mr. Sonnemann has appeared before numerous parliamentary committees documenting the link between pornography and sexual aggression, and has successfully lobbied to raise the age of models that appear in pornography and ban the use of "child magnets" and "pseudo-child imagery" in Australian pornography.

He is a frequent guest on Australian national radio and television shows. Memorably, Playboy’s editor was fired after debating Mr. Sonnemann on Australia’s Today Show.

Thousands across Australia read his newsletter, The AFF Journal. Members of the Australian Federation for the Family have been responsible for removing Playboy from some of Australia's largest retailers.

One hundred percent of the advertisers in Australian Playboy and Penthouse cancelled their advertising contracts after being targeted by AFF's national boycott campaigns. No longer able to withstand the financial pressure, Australian Playboy magazine ceased to exist in 2001.

The radical Australian homosexual community has been able to legitimize homosexual adoption, same-sex marriage, redefine concepts such as tolerance and vilification and make dangerous inroads into Australia's school curriculums. AFF continues to document the link between homosexuality and pedophilia and outlines many of the negative health effects of homosexuality before legislators, church and community leaders. We regard each individual homosexual as equally in need of redemption as every heterosexual and treat them with equal love and dignity.
