Music lyrics have undergone dramatic changes since the introduction of rock music more than 40 years ago. This is an issue of vital interest and concern for parents and pediatricians.

According to the National Coalition on Television Violence (NCTV) in the US, the average 21 year-old has been bombarded with 10,000 hours of violent programming. The typical 16 year-old has seen 250,000 violent acts including 33,000 dramatised murders as well as tens of thousands of simulated rapes, assaults and shootings.

Of more than 3,500 research studies conducted over the past forty years, all but 18 have shown a positive correlation between media exposure and violent behavior. Here are some of the findings.
