Dear Prime Minister,
ISPs are sending Internet porn into Australia at an alarming rate and studies show that not only is it placing Australian women in danger of serious sexual assault and harming our marriages but it is now well known that children are accessing this degrading, addicting and grossly pornographic imagery.
A 2015 meta-analysis of 22 studies (one of the most reliable forms of research possible) from seven countries "A Meta-Analysis of Pornography Consumption and Actual Acts of Sexual Aggression in General Population Studies" first published in the Journal of Communication 29 Dec 2015 found that internationally the consumption of pornography was significantly associated with increases in verbal and physical aggression. Another meta-analysis, "Pornography Consumption and Satisfaction" published 2 March 2017 in the scientific journal Human Communication Research shows that pornography is linked to significant “lower sexual and relational satisfaction among male viewers.
Further, Drs. John and Julie Gottman, world-renowned researchers and clinical psychologists, wrote an Open Letter on Porn to discuss the corroding effect of pornography for couples. In their letter, the Gottmans stated: “We are led to unconditionally conclude that for many reasons, pornography poses a serious threat to couple intimacy and relationship harmony.”
In light of the fact that the overwhelming bulk of scientific studies prove the "clear and consistent" detrimental effect of porn, as Dr Claudio Violato from the University of Calgary proves in his metaanalysis published in Medicine, Mind and Adolescence, which he correctly asserts is "consistent with previous meta-analyses", will you please enact some sort of Opt-In provision for Internet porn in Australia? This has been accomplished in other 1st world countries (Iceland and the UK come readilly to mind), will create no further government departments, cost no money, protect the civil liberties of those of us who have no wish to see Internet porn and is NOT a censorship proposal.
