In the aftermath of the highly publicised battle over RU486, we have both good and bad news. However, we at AFF believe that we have won an impressive victory against RU486 here in Australia because of the massive public outcry against the drug!
The Bad News
Our representatives refused to represent us. Thousands of letters and hundreds of submissions against RU486 were ignored by those elected to represent us. Our Senators and MPs voted to remove parliamentary oversight of this human pesticide and placed it in the category of a “therapeutic” item. The Therapeutic Goods Administration should never have been given authority to even look at RU486 because it is NOT “therapeutic”. Its purpose is to kill!
The Good News
The pro-life campaign was so effective that drug companies have so far shown extreme reluctance to market the drug in Australia! The TGA requires a payment of almost one million dollars to trial a drug. Because of the scale of public outcry against RU486, it now seems unlikely that a drug company will come up with so much money to trial RU486 in Australia. The Sunday Telgraph on February 26 2006 quoted a source close to the drug companies as saying “it's not particularly clever to register such a medicine (RU486) when we're going to get a range of groups capable of generating a lot of publicity targeting the whole industry,”
Take heart: your letters may have had no effect on our “representatives”, but they have been noted with great seriousness by those who would otherwise seek to market RU486 in this country. This is another example of God’s faithfulness. If we walk in the good works He has prepared for us we will see good fruit from them sooner or later. He requires us to be obedient, not all-powerful.
